1. Immediate Aftercare (First 24 Hours)
- Leave the bandage/wrap on: Your artist will cover the fresh tattoo with a sterile bandage or plastic wrap. Leave it on for 2-4 hours (or as per your artist’s instructions).
- Wash your hands: Always clean your hands thoroughly before touching the tattoo.
- Gently clean the tattoo:
- After removing the wrap, use lukewarm water and mild, unscented antibacterial soap to gently clean the area.
- Pat it dry with a clean, soft towel or paper towel. Avoid rubbing the tattoo.
- Let it breathe: After cleaning, allow the tattoo to air dry till the next day. Avoid re-wrapping unless advised.
2. Ongoing Aftercare (Days 1-14)
- Moisturize regularly:
- Apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare ointment (like Bepanthen tattoo or a tattoo-specific balm) 2 times a day.
- Avoid over-applying, as too much moisture can suffocate the skin.
- Avoid direct water exposure:
- Keep the tattoo dry and avoid soaking it in water (e.g., baths, swimming pools, hot tubs, or the sea).
- Showering is fine but avoid letting the water spray directly on the tattoo.
- Do not pick or scratch:
- Your tattoo will scab and peel; this is a normal part of healing. Do not scratch or peel off the skin, as it may cause scarring or color loss.
- Wear loose, clean clothing:
- Avoid tight or abrasive fabrics that can rub against the tattoo. Opt for breathable, soft materials.
- Keep it clean:
- Clean the tattoo gently once or twice a day with mild soap, as described above.
3. Long-Term Aftercare (After 2 Weeks)
- Protect from the sun:
- Once healed, apply sunscreen (SPF 30+ or higher) to protect the tattoo from fading caused by UV rays.
- Hydrate the skin:
- Keep the tattoo moisturized daily with a fragrance-free lotion to maintain its vibrancy.
- Avoid exfoliants:
- Stay away from harsh scrubs or chemical exfoliants on the tattooed area.
Things to Avoid During Healing
- Scratching, picking, or peeling the tattoo.
- Soaking the tattoo in water (pools, baths, oceans).
- Sun exposure without protection.
- Excessive sweating or activities that cause friction (like intense workouts).
- Using alcohol-based or scented products on the tattoo.
By following these steps, your tattoo should heal smoothly and remain vibrant for years! Always listen to your tattoo artist’s specific advice, as it may vary slightly based on their preferences.
